Behind the Scenes: The Heart and Soul of My Jewelry Studio (Part 2)
Now that I have let you in on the behind-the-scenes of my space, I want to walk you through my process and journey through creating pieces.
CREATIVE PROCESS
When I first enter the studio, I open up things like the doors and windows to let in the air. The little studio gets hot in summer, and I can't function if my brain can't breathe. I turn on my PC to immediately cue good tunes or put up a Netflix show I've watched a thousand times!
Next, the pickle is on, the water bowl is filled, and my coffee is made. I check my designs for the day and set a little checklist—I love to tick things off as I go because I work in batches rather than one piece at a time! My brain feels more at peace when I can do the same thing repeatedly, as if it's saving time.
As I get going, I make sure I take breaks, film some content when I can remember (honestly, I forget 90% of the time), hunt for the lost gemstones, and then wrap up at the end of the day by turning off all torches, plugs, and PC.
THE JOURNEY FROM INSPIRATION TO THE FINISHED PIECE
From ethereal realms to tangible artistry, my muses are legion—legends from distant lands and realms unseen. Inspired by tomes of fantasy and lore, from the sweeping epics of Middle-earth to the intricate tapestries of distant kingdoms, each page breathes life into designs that evoke the very essence of their origin.
THE FAVORED CHAMPIONS OF MY CRAFT
In the hands of every artist, tools become an extension of themselves, a conduit for creativity, precision, and passion. In my jewellery studio, these instruments below are some of my favourite companions, bringing each piece to life–
While these may also seem like simple objects to the untrained eye, they each hold the secrets to crafting true works of art.
Sterling silver and 9ct gold are stalwarts that withstand the rough rigors of creation, but recently I have been finding more creativity in what I can mould with metal clay. Gems, as myriad as the stars, adorn my creations, each selected with reverence for their story and allure. Let me know your favourites because I just cannot pick!
Behold my arsenal of choice - the Foredom pendant motor, a harbinger of efficiency with an endless myriad of accessories I can use; the mitre jig, a savior from the abyss of crooked lines; the planishing hammer, wielded to forge resilience in every earring hook; and the mandrel pliers, architects of flawless symmetry - perfect for making small bezels and bails.
In conclusion, my studio transcends its physical form—it is a sanctuary where dreams take shape, and each creation bears the mark of its genesis. May this glimpse into my world kindle an understanding of the passion and dedication woven into every piece, each a testament to the art of handcrafted jewelry.
My studio is more than just a workspace; it's a haven where creativity thrives. I hope this peek behind the scenes gives you a deeper appreciation for the handcrafted jewellery I create.
